How to Diagnose Connectivity Issues with IoT Network Intelligence

Published by Tom Foster June 12, 2019

With Cirrent's IoT Network Intelligence solution, you can get all the networking data that you want in one place and companies can even hook up your own data sources. Whether you are an engineer or in charge of product, more data is better to deliver a superior customer experience.

The Cirrent engineering team has focused on how an engineer at a company making connected products would use INI to analyze events, compare data across different parameters and diagnose issues-- down to an individual device.

Oftentimes, an engineer is alerted to an issue by their support team. There may be an uptick in calls about a product or a variety of products. Support will generally let the engineering team know that there seems to be a connectivity problem. Support may track the calls and keep copious notes, but these are anecdotes. To get to the root of the problem, the engineering team needs more data across the fleet.

With INI, an engineer is able to go to the Cirrent Console and see all events across all device types. You can pinpoint on a graph where the change occurs and click through to get more details.

On the event page, we see the below table which shows the number of Wi-Fi Reassociation problems and how this correlates with different parameters.

If the box is red, that means that parameter is performing worse than average. If it’s green, it is performing better than average. If it's yellow, it's about average. Each box correlates to a specific device type or unique ISP or distinct router, etc. In the screenshot below, the top right box in the “Firmware Version” column is clearly performing much worse than average.

By clicking into the box, you’re able to click the exact firmware version.

The next dashboard shows all the unique devices that have that particular firmware version. You’re able to filter by different parameters and click into a specific device.

Once you click into a specific device, you’re taken to the Device Explorer page where you can see more detailed information on that device. You can see both historical and real time network performance and pinpoint exactly when the uptick of connectivity issues started to occur.
